The DIT Satellite Centre provides a test bed for projects
involving several aspects of Earth satellites. Current
projects involve Earth observation (two weather systems) and Global
Positioning System (GPS) applications. The
activity in this centre is continually growing and is used by visiting
ERASMUS students as well as our own for satellite projects.
TRINET project is being run by the non-profit humanitarian Informatics
Development Institute of which V. Thorne is a director.
TRINET is working to provide low-cost Internet
access to remote regions of the developing world. Recently
four satellite ground stations have been shipped from the Satellite
Centre in DIT Kevin Street to locations in Africa viz.
Ghana, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. These
are now operational with technical support from the School.
Currently involved in cancer therapy research using UHF radio
frequencies to sensitise tumour cells. This work follows on the
pioneering accomplishments of Dr John Holt of Perth, Western Australia
who visited DIT in 2004.
