Research

Systematic Analysis of Unknown Integrated Circuits

Until now, many different strategies have been developed to analyse structures of unknown integrated circuits (ICs). The goal is often to duplicate the original product functionality or to proof the observance of patents. Using chemical and mechanical procedures, the IC is analysed towards its structure or netlist of the used function. Moreover, using static random-access memories (SRAM)-based Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) the bitstream of the configuration data can be copied using an oscilloscope. All the described and other procedures are very complex to handle and the technologies are very expensive. This research focusses on a test environment to analyse integrated circuits. Starting with digital ICs, the aim of this research is to find new strategies and procedures to analyse integrated circuits without any prior knowledge of the structure or netlist. One further constraint is that the procedure employed is to be non-invasive. The overall setup will consist of a test environment and an adapter both of which are easy to handle. For this reason algorithms will be investigated and optimised to generate test vectors to evaluate the function and therefore the structure of different integrated circuits. The investigated and optimised algorithms will be tested using the described test environment.
